Outdoor Wall Lighting: The bigger the door, the bigger the light

Outdoor Wall Lighting: The bigger the door, the bigger the light

A big mistake: Choosing a light that is too small and thus not fabulous, for your entrance. Small fixtures get visually lost, so save them for back or side doors and cute little sheds.

Best practice to protect your precious curb appeal is to select outdoor lighting that is around 1/5th of your front door’s height and hang it at eye level (around 5 ½ feet from the ground).  If you can, center the fixture to any existing hardware like a mailbox or address numbers just to keep things looking symmetrical. If nothing is pre-existing to balance, make sure the fixture is around 6-12” away from the door itself just so it has some room to shine!

The Calculation:

door height x .2 (that’s 1/5 in decimal) = suggested fixture height

example:  80” door x .2 = 16” H outdoor fixture
